I hope all has been going well for you since last summer! Believe it or not, it is that time of year again as The East Bay Summer Wind Ensemble is beginning rehearsals for its 35th Summer Season of music. We will continue to rehearse on the stage at Somerset High School in Somerset, Massachusetts where I am the Director of Bands. The space has worked quite well for us and the acoustics are outstanding. In addition, we have lots of percussion equipment at our disposal and an entire auditorium of seats for visitors to sit down, listen in and for you to set-up your equipment in. Our first rehearsal of the season will take place on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. on the stage at Somerset High. Please see the Directions Page for directions to the school. Parking is available in the teachers’ lot adjacent to the south (Auditorium) entrance to the school. Additional updates will be made available on the website throughout the season and remember to join the forum to be able to ask questions and converse online with other EBSWE members regarding the ensemble. Additionally, pictures and performance recordings from previous seasons are on-line as well. Additional updates will be made available on the Current News Page throughout the season and remember to join the forum to be able to ask questions and converse online with other EBSWE members regarding the ensemble. Additionally, pictures and sounds from previous season are on-line as well.
Again this year, in order to cut down on the amount of time that registration sets us back at the first rehearsals, I am going to offer a pre-registration option. Attached to this email is a form that you can send back to me to pre-register for the season (please mail to EBSWE - 17 Naomi Street - Bristol, RI 02809). The fee will be $30 and you can pre-purchase EBSWE Folios ($15) and Performance Polo Shirts ($25) as well. Please remember that you still can register at the first rehearsal and you will have the first two rehearsals in which you can order your folio and polo. With this option however, I foresee us spending less time on logistics and more time on rehearsing as our first concert will be coming up soon. I do not have a date yet; I am still waiting on those in charge of the concert series in Bristol to give us a date.
I would also like to extend an invitation to any of you that are interested in helping out the The East Bay Summer Youth Ensemble by performing with and assisting the group at rehearsals and performances. Many members perform with the group on secondary instruments as a way to enhance their music skills. No additional fee is charged for this participation, so if you are interested in joining us, please let me know at the first EBSWE rehearsal as the youth group does not begin rehearsing until the next week.
Additionally, we will once again be offering advertisement space and patrons’ acknowledgements in our annual program booklet. This fundraiser was very successful in the past and I have high expectations for it once again this year. We are getting closer to paying off the total purchase of the trailer. I would also like to build the EBSWE library and purchase equipment to be owned by the organization in the future. This is one of the ways I can foresee these kinds of things happening. Your efforts last year were overwhelming and I once again ask that you help by seeking out businesses and individuals that are interested in supporting our goals. Below are links to Program Ad Information Sheets, Order Forms, 3 Program Advertisement Sample Sheets (1/8 Page, 1/2 Page and Full Page) and Trailer Advertisement Placard Flyers. If you have any questions regarding this fundraiser, please feel free to contact me!
Finally, I am also very happy to announce that we will be once again be sponsoring The East Bay Summer Chorus. Last year the ensemble had a great first season and they are excited to perform again this summer. They are looking for new membership as well. Rehearsals for the EBSC will take place on the stage/auditorium at Somerset High School on Friday evenings from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. starting on Friday, May 21, 2010. We hope to have the same diversity in the chorus that we boast with EBSWE in that its membership will consist of vocalists of all ages and backgrounds! The registration fee for the group is $35, but will be reduced to $20 for active EBSWE members that are interested in performing with both groups!
Regardless of this email, you can expect this information mailed to you this week as well. Please feel to print, distribute and/or display the attached recruitment posters. I am extremely excited to see you all again for what promises to be a very exciting and memorable season. Please call me at the above number or send me an email at marshalld@somerset.k12.ma.us if you have any questions or concerns regarding the ensemble or the season. Enjoy your spring and we will see you on May 26th!

Dear Members (Past and Present),
After an afternoon of searching the old offices of the East Bay Association for the Arts (which is located in the basement of Lt. Col. Grimo's mother's basement in Bristol), Lt. Col. Grimo and I found decades worth of pictures, programs, instruments, equipment and records associated with the many ensembles that made up the E.B.A.A. during the late 1970's and early 1980's. These priceless historical items are now on display here on our web-site. I hope that after reviewing our past, we have found a new direction for our ensemble's future. This legacy of community music that has survived 3 decades, thanks to the efforts of our past directors, and it is my hope that it will continue to expand and evolve. Many new ideas will be explored, concert venues scheduled, guest artists invited to join us and ensembles created or reinstated over the next few years. Stay tuned to this site throughout the upcoming months for updates as to our direction and progress! The future holds no bounds!
